Why the longer drive is barely longer
Friedrichshafen is 138 kilometres; Memmingen is 175. 37 kilometres more, but only about twenty minutes: the A96 begins effectively at the airport gate and runs unbroken to Lindau. From there it is the same road as the drive from Friedrichshafen, kilometre for kilometre, all the way up to Lech.
Which resort the transfer serves
Lech lies at 1,450 metres in its own valley, eight kilometres beyond Zürs on the Flexenstraße and the furthest of the five villages from Memmingen at 175 kilometres. It is the largest of the four on the Vorarlberg side, with its own centre, its own river and Oberlech on the terrace above it.
It shares the Ski Arlberg pass with St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben and Zürs — around 300 kilometres of piste and 85 lifts on one ticket — and it is the village most guests arriving through Memmingen with a week booked are heading for.

Winter and summer transfers
Most of our Memmingen transfers run in winter, when the resort is full and the skiing is on. Summer transfers are quieter, but it is the same road and the same price, and the same private transfers carry walkers and cyclists in July that carry skiers in February.

The Memmingen Airport to Lech am Arlberg Route
The drive begins in the Allgäu and ends at 1,450 m. Allgäu Airport Memmingen sits immediately on the A96, so the motorway begins where the luggage goes in — south-west past Leutkirch im Allgäu and Wangen to Lindau.
At Lindau this route meets the one from Friedrichshafen, and from there on it is the same road. A few minutes later, at Hörbranz, it crosses into Austria. From the border the A14 runs through the Pfänder tunnel past Bregenz, then down the Rhine valley through Feldkirch to Bludenz.
At Bludenz the route turns east onto the S16 and climbs into the Klostertal, past Wald am Arlberg and Klösterle to Langen am Arlberg.
At Langen am Arlberg the transfer leaves the S16 before the tunnel portal and climbs through Stuben to Alpe Rauz, then north up the Flexenstraße through Zürs and down into Lech.
The Flexenstraße is the piece worth knowing about. It is cut into the rock face in a series of galleries and short tunnels, and in winter it is the only road into Lech at all: the road north over Warth closes for the season because of avalanche risk. From December to April, everything and everyone that reaches Lech comes up this way.
That single fact decides more about a winter arrival in Lech than any comparison of airports does. There is no second road to fall back on, which is why the last half-hour is the part of the journey worth putting in experienced hands.
Winter conditions on this road
The Flexenstraße is the whole of the winter question on this route. It is cleared early and driven all season, and our drivers are on it every day in both directions. When heavy snowfall closes it briefly, it is closed for everyone — a private transfer cannot open a road, but the driver knows before you leave the airport rather than after.
Germany into Austria: what the border means for your transfer
The border is crossed at Hörbranz, just past Lindau, roughly halfway through the journey. Germany and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no check there. Temporary checks can be reintroduced, which is why you should carry the identity document you flew with and keep it where you can reach it.
Everything else is our problem. The Austrian motorway vignette and the toll for the Pfänder tunnel are inside the fixed price. Nothing is collected from you in the car, and you do not stop at a toll booth with your wallet out.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between the arrivals hall and your accommodation. Anyone covering the same ground by train and bus changes vehicle several times in those hours — each time with a ski bag.
Two of our six airports are in Germany, Memmingen and Friedrichshafen, and both cross the same border at the same place. Innsbruck is the only one with no border at all; Zurich lies in a third country, with a vignette of its own.
Where the transfer ends in Lech and Oberlech

Oberlech is the exception, and it is worth understanding before you arrive. The terrace above the village is car-free in winter, and it is reached by the gondola from the valley station. We set you and your luggage down there, the staff load the bags onto trolleys, and you ride up while they follow. With a lift pass the gondola is included, and it runs from seven in the morning until one at night.
Hotels with their own tunnel from the goods hall are the second case: for those we drive up the steep road to the hall, where a barrier with a bell opens, and your hotel collects you inside with an electric cart and takes you through the tunnel to the door. Getting from Memmingen Airport to Lech: Transfer, Train, Bus or Rental Car?
There are four realistic options for getting from Memmingen Airport to Lech, and which of them is the affordable one depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.
Lech has no railway station. The nearest is Langen am Arlberg, at the bottom of the Flexenstraße, and the climb above it has to be driven whatever you arrive by. The train covers the easy part of the journey and stops where the part that matters begins.
