The airport is officially Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein, code ACH. It stands at Altenrhein on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and is named after St. Gallen, the city about twenty kilometres inland. The shortest drive to the Arlberg
Of the six airports we serve, Altenrhein is the closest to Zürs: 110 kilometres. The reason is where it stands — at the mouth of the Rhine where it meets Lake Constance, which is to say at the entrance of the valley the drive follows anyway.
Which resort the transfer serves
Zürs lies at 1,717 metres on the Flexenstraße, between Alpe Rauz below it and Lech eight kilometres beyond. It is the second-highest of the five villages and the quietest of them: a short row of hotels on one road, with lifts at both ends of it.
Of the six airports we serve, Altenrhein is the closest to Zürs. It shares the Ski Arlberg pass with St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben and Lech — around 300 kilometres of piste and 85 lifts on one ticket, reachable from Zürs without taking a car out.

Winter and summer transfers
Most of our Altenrhein transfers run in winter, when the resort is full and the skiing is on. Summer transfers are quieter, but it is the same road and the same price, and the same private transfers carry walkers and cyclists in July that carry skiers in February.
What a ski transfer carries
A ski transfer is not simply a taxi with skis in it. The rear ski rack takes skis and boards outside the cabin, so eight people and eight ski bags travel in one vehicle instead of two. Altenrhein to Zürs Transfer: Price, Distance & Journey Time

The Altenrhein Airport to Zürs am Arlberg Route
The drive begins on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and ends at 1,717 m. From Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein the road runs south through St. Margrethen to the Rhine.
At Höchst the road crosses the Rhine, and with it the border from Switzerland into Austria. That happens early — a few minutes in, rather than close to the destination.
After that it joins the A14 and passes Bregenz on the south side. The Pfänder tunnel never appears on this route: it lies north of the city, and our drives from Friedrichshafen and Memmingen come from that side and go through it. This one does not.
The A14 follows the Rhine valley past Dornbirn, Hohenems and Rankweil to Feldkirch and on to Bludenz. There the route turns east onto the S16 and climbs into the Klostertal, past Wald am Arlberg and Klösterle to Langen am Arlberg.
At Langen am Arlberg the transfer leaves the S16 before the tunnel portal and climbs through Stuben to Alpe Rauz, where the Flexenstraße turns north and rises to Zürs. No Arlberg tunnel toll arises on this drive.
The Flexenstraße is the piece worth knowing about. It is cut into the rock face in a series of galleries and short tunnels, and it is the only road into Zürs that is open in winter: the road north from Lech over Warth closes for the season because of avalanche risk. From December to April everything that reaches Zürs and Lech comes up this way.
Winter conditions on this road
The Flexenstraße is the whole of the winter question on this route, and it is a question our drivers answer every day. It is cleared early and driven all season. When it does close briefly after heavy snowfall, it closes for everyone — a private transfer cannot open a road, but the driver knows before you land rather than after.
Switzerland into Austria: what the border means for your transfer
The border is crossed at Höchst, over the Rhine, a few minutes after setting off. Switzerland and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so you are not normally asked for documents there.
One thing here is different from our German borders: Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU customs union. Passport checks are not the rule, but a customs check is possible in a way it simply is not between Germany and Austria. Carry the identity document you flew with somewhere you can reach it.
Everything else is our problem. Both vignettes, the Swiss and the Austrian, are inside the fixed price. Nothing is collected from you in the car, and you do not stop at a toll booth with your wallet out.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between the arrivals hall and your accommodation. Anyone covering the same ground by rail changes between two national networks at this border — each time with a ski bag in hand.
Two of our six airports are in Switzerland: Altenrhein and Zurich. Innsbruck is the only one with no border at all; Friedrichshafen and Memmingen are in Germany, where the customs union is the same one.
Where the transfer ends in Zürs
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall at Altenrhein, holding a sign with your name on it. It is the smallest airport we drive to: a single hall, with the car parks directly in front of it. A few steps from the door to the vehicle — no walk through two terminals and no train underneath.

It is worth saying because Zürs has no station, no through road in winter and no bus that runs at every hour. Whatever brings you here comes up the Flexenstraße, and a private transfer is the only version of that which starts at the aircraft door and ends at the hotel door.

Skis, snowboards and luggage
Skis and snowboards travel on the rear-door ski rack, outside the cabin — nobody spends the drive with a ski bag across their knees. Ski carriage is free: we charge no equipment supplement the way a shared shuttle does. Boot bags, helmets and suitcases go inside with the rest of the luggage.

Getting from Altenrhein Airport to Zürs: Transfer, Train, Bus or Rental Car?
There are four realistic options for getting from Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein to Zürs, and which of them is the affordable one depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.
Zürs has no railway station. The nearest is Langen am Arlberg, at the bottom of the climb, and the Flexenstraße above it has to be driven whatever you arrive by. A rail journey from Altenrhein also means changing between the Swiss and Austrian networks at the border.
Rail here also brings something our German routes do not: at the border you move between the Swiss and the Austrian networks. With light baggage that is manageable; with a ski bag and a boot bag each, the changes are what decide it, and the last stretch of mountain road is still there at the end.
A rental car earns its keep if you plan to drive during the stay. If it would sit outside the hotel all week, a private transfer saves you the winter driving across a border, two vignettes, and the return of the car on the morning of the flight home.
The bus has the most changes on this route and the tightest timetable. It can be cheap; it is never direct.
