Zürs comes before Lech
Arriving from Friedrichshafen you reach Zürs first: past Alpe Rauz the Flexenstraße runs to Zürs, and Lech is eight kilometres beyond it. You do not drive through Lech and come back — 130 kilometres rather than 138, at the same fare, and half an hour less than people often expect.
Where the two routes part
As far as Langen am Arlberg this is the same journey as the one to St. Anton: the same border, the same Rhine valley, the same Klostertal. At Langen they separate. The St. Anton transfer goes into the Arlberg tunnel; the Zürs transfer leaves the expressway there and climbs past Stuben to Alpe Rauz. That is why no Arlberg tunnel toll arises on this route.
Which resort the transfer serves
Zürs am Arlberg stands at 1,717 metres and is the highest of the five Arlberg resorts. Stuben sits just before it on the same road, and St. Christoph lies on the other side of Alpe Rauz. All five resorts share one lift pass — around 300 kilometres of piste and 85 lifts — and we drive private transfers from Friedrichshafen to every one of them.
Winter and summer transfers
Most of our Friedrichshafen transfers run in winter, when the resort is full and the skiing is on. Summer transfers are quieter, but it is the same road and the same price. Ski transfers to Zürs
Most of our winter work is ski transfers. Skis and snowboards travel free on the rear rack, outside the cabin — eight people and eight ski bags fit in one vehicle instead of two. The ski pass covers all five resorts, so where you ski and where you sleep need not be the same village — guests staying in Zürs ski the whole of the Arlberg, and our ski transfers run to every one of the resorts on that pass. The Friedrichshafen Airport to Zürs am Arlberg Route
The journey begins on Lake Constance and ends at 1,717 metres. From the airport the B31 runs east along the shore to Lindau; a few minutes later, at Hörbranz, the road crosses into Austria.
From there it is motorway: the A14 through the Pfänder tunnel and past Bregenz, then down the Rhine valley through Dornbirn and Feldkirch to Bludenz. There the route turns east onto the S16 and climbs the Klostertal, past Dalaas, Wald am Arlberg and Klösterle to Langen am Arlberg.
At Langen we leave the expressway, short of the tunnel mouth. Three kilometres up the hill is Stuben, then Alpe Rauz — and from there it is five kilometres of the Flexenstraße, through the galleries, into the resort.
The roads this transfer uses
Four roads make up the drive, and they could not be more different from one another: a lakeside road, a motorway, an expressway up a valley, and a road cut into rock. The first three are main roads driven by everybody and they are comfortable at any hour; the fourth is the one we are paid for. A direct transfer takes all four without you changing vehicle once, which is the whole argument for it.
Alpe Rauz, the hinge
Every road to Zürs meets at Alpe Rauz. From Friedrichshafen you reach it from below, up the Klostertal; from Innsbruck you reach it from above, over the Arlbergpass. It is the same place approached from two opposite directions — and after it, both drives take the same Flexenstraße.
Winter conditions on this road
Conditions change along the way rather than all at once, and the conditions at the lake are rarely the conditions on the Flexenstraße. The first hundred and fifteen kilometres are main roads, cleared early and driven all winter. The last fifteen are mountain road, and they are what the morning turns on: the Flexenstraße is the only way in, which is why it is watched more closely than any other road on the Arlberg.
Germany into Austria: what the border means for your transfer
The border is crossed at Hörbranz, just past Lindau, about twenty minutes after setting off. Germany and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no check there. Temporary checks can be reintroduced, which is why you should carry the identity document you flew with.
Everything else is our problem: the Austrian motorway vignette and the Pfänder tunnel toll are inside the fixed price. No Arlberg tunnel toll arises here, because the drive to Zürs turns off at Langen rather than entering the tunnel.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and nobody stops at a toll booth with a wallet out.
