Door-to-Door Pickup in Stuben am Arlberg

The Route from Stuben am Arlberg to Altenrhein Airport
The Stuben am Arlberg to Altenrhein Airport route is the simplest of the five. Three kilometres down the L197 to Langen am Arlberg, onto the S16, and then the Klostertal past Klösterle and Dalaas to Bludenz. From there the A14 runs through the Rhine valley past Feldkirch and Dornbirn, and the border into Switzerland comes at Höchst, south of Bregenz. No pass, no Arlberg tunnel, no Pfänder: of all the drives we make to this airport, this is the one with the fewest things on it.
The journey is direct: no other passengers, no second vehicle and no stop between your door and the hall. The hard part comes at the beginning rather than the end — once the mountain road is behind you, the rest is motorway all the way to the lake.
Two places on that road have pages of their own: Langen am Arlberg, three kilometres down the valley, and the nearest station, and Klösterle, the next village down the Klostertal. We drive the same road from both.
Austria into Switzerland: what the border means on the way out
The border is crossed at Höchst, south of Bregenz, about ten minutes short of the airport. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU customs union — so a passport check is the exception, while a customs check is possible. On the way out that matters more than it did on the way in: you are leaving the EU customs area. Keep the identity document you are flying with somewhere you can reach it rather than at the bottom of a case.
Everything else is our problem. On this road the vehicle needs two vignettes, the Austrian one and the Swiss one, and both are inside the fixed price, and no Arlberg tunnel toll arises on this route at all. The Pfänder tunnel is not on this drive — it leaves the Rhine valley south of it. Nobody stops at a toll booth, and nobody adds anything up at the end of the journey.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between your accommodation and the departures hall. Anyone covering the same ground by train and bus changes vehicle several times in those hours — each time with a ski bag.
Innsbruck is the only one of the six airports we drive to with no border involved at all. Friedrichshafen and Memmingen are in Germany: one border, one vignette. Altenrhein and Zurich are both in Switzerland and need two — but Zurich is nearly twice as far away.
On the Morning of Your Flight
By the evening before, you know when you are leaving. The call is the point at which a forecast is replaced by something better: around sixty colleagues are connected by radio, and whoever is out on the road says what it is doing.

Altenrhein is the smallest airport we drive to and Stuben is the shortest drive to it, which makes this the least demanding morning of the twenty-five airport transfers we run from the Arlberg. Three and a half hours before departure still applies: the drive takes an hour and ten, and the rest is check-in and a margin for the weather.
Altenrhein is a compact regional airport with a single terminal. We set you down directly in front of it; the walk from the vehicle to check-in is a short one, and there is no second terminal and no train between them. That is the difference from a large airport, and on the morning of a departure you notice it.
Checking in with ski luggage still takes longer than checking in without it: oversized bags go in separately. That is what the three and a half hours are for — not the drive itself, which takes about 1h 10min.

How Do You Want to Get to Altenrhein Airport?
On the way home one argument turns around. Arriving, you get there when you get there; leaving, the timetable decides when your day starts — you work back from the train’s departure rather than from your flight.
Stuben is the one village on the Arlberg where the train is genuinely close: Langen am Arlberg station is three kilometres away, about five minutes by road. The line from there runs down the Rhine valley, which is most of the way. What it does not do is reach the airport — Altenrhein has no station — so the journey still ends on the road, and it still means moving the ski bags twice. The transfer does the same distance without either change.
On this route there is also something the Innsbruck drive does not have: the border. By rail that usually means moving between two networks and two timetables; in the car it means a road sign. A rental car also has to be returned at the airport, which on departure day is one more task with a deadline attached.
